I recently had a pseudo-argument with a friend on Facebook in regards to education. He seemed to think that what I meant by education only referred to what was learned in school. I went on to explain that we are all students if we continue to learn and grow from the people and world around us. School represents only a fraction of our education.

Thomas Edison famously said “life, itself, is an institute of learning”. This quote really embodies the point of the previously stated story.

This led me to think about what education is in the grand scheme of our lives and how certain quotes are helpful in explaining:
  • How education is and how it is important in our lives
  • How making mistakes is the best thing you can do for yourself and your education
  • How being endlessly curious can make you smarter and happier
  • How passing down not only knowledge, but skills to future students betters us as humans
Throughout my research (“Googling”) I started seeing these education quotes pop up from time to time. I decided to start collecting them and post a new blog about them.

  1. “The quickest way to become an old dog is to stop learning new tricks.” - John Rooney
    • A friend of mine recently told me that if the place that she works were to interview her for a position, she probably would not be hired. I’ve always tried to pride myself on staying ahead of the times and up to date on current research in regards to teaching as well as math and science concepts.
    • An analogy I always tell my students is that species go extinct because they evolve and adapt to their surroundings. This quote embodies that same idea. If you do not evolve as a person with your skills and knowledge, you will become extinct.
  2. “I have no special talent, I am only passionately curious.” - Albert Einstein
    • This is a classic from Einstein who had many thoughts and ideas about education throughout his life.
    • He was one of the first famous science celebrities and brought a whole new meaning to being absent-minded by being so enamored with his work. This quote really embodies that.
  3. “The person who knows ‘how’ will always have a job; the person who knows ‘why’ will always be the boss.” - John Maxwell
  4. “Every man I meet is my master in some point and in that I learn from him.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
    • This quote explains the old adage about everyone you meet knows something you don’t. You can learn from anyone regardless of anything.
  5. “Education is learning what you didn’t even know you didn’t know.” - Daniel Boorstin
    • I’d love to add to this quote that also, the more you know learn, the more you realize you don’t know.
  6. “Don’t let your learning lead to knowledge. Let your learning lead to action.” - Jim Rohn
    • Learning for the sake of learning is a neutral state. Learning to do something with it is power.
  7. “Unless you do something beyond what you’ve already mastered, you will never grow.” - Ronald E. Osborne
    • Most people are so scared to get out of their comfort zone that they never truly grow.
  8. “The greatest enemy of learning is knowing.” - John Maxwell
    • Too many people think that knowing makes someone smart rather than having a conceptual understanding.
  9. “You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life, but in a new way.” - Doris Lessing
  10. “There is nothing new under the sun, but there are lots of old things we don’t know.” - Ambrose Bierce
